Need to catch up? Part 1 is here and part 2 is here.
Saturday my husband finally got around to mowing our grass (to the cheers of our neighbors). He was careful to avoid the birds, but got chirped at vigorously every time he passed. I checked on them later in the evening and all was closer to better. I got quite a scolding myself.
Sunday morning we were saddened to find an empty nest. I found it before we left for church and decided that it might be best to wait and tell the girls afterwards.
We are pretty sure that something took the eggs overnight. Since we knew the date the eggs were laid, we knew when to expect them to hatch. It was supposed to be around Easter. This was far to early.
I let the girls know that the eggs were gone. They were a little sad and a little disappointed (and I admit so am I), but they took it very well. I explained that nature isn't always easy for animals and sometimes things don't work out how we hope. I also mentioned that the birds may come back to lay more eggs if we don't mess with their nest. I'm not sure if they will, but we will watch for them. If they do, we will bring out the flags and start our little vigil again.
